Warrenton Equestrian Arena & Round Pen

This project for constructing a new arena involved several carefully planned and executed stages, each contributing to the overall functionality and aesthetic of the site.

Initially, our team arrived on-site to layout the arena as per the owner’s request. After consulting with the owner, we identified areas for spreading excess topsoil, which was then stripped and placed accordingly. Following this, we ensured that all areas affected by the topsoil removal were properly dressed up and restored.

The next step was the cut and fill process for the arena. Utilizing the existing cut material, we shaped the arena, ensuring that the site was balanced and had adequate drainage. The design aimed for a 0.5 to 1% fall, depending on the existing ground conditions. All fill material was compacted with a vibratory roller to ensure solid compaction.

Fine grading of the dirt subgrade was the subsequent phase. Using a laser grading system, we achieved a fine grade within a quarter-inch tolerance, ensuring that the arena had a consistent 0.5% to 1.0% across its grade.

Installation of the separation fabric followed. This fabric was laid with a one-foot overlap on all edges, providing a stable and durable base for the subsequent layers.

The placement of the 3-inch stone dust material was then initiated. Although the stone dust material was provided by the owner, our team managed the trucking and delivery. After placing the stone dust, we compacted it with a vibratory roller and then fine-graded it using the laser grading system. A recompacting process followed to solidify the base.

Similarly, we placed and fine-graded a 3-inch layer of sand material. After compaction, we fine graded the sand to the same precision as the stone dust and recompacted it. Special care was taken to prepare the top surface with an arena drag, making it ready for use by the owner.

The installation of the perimeter fence and a 10ft walk-through gate marked the next stage. Half-round posts were installed around the arena’s perimeter, with two full-round posts at the gate location, followed by the installation of the gate itself. Oak boards with three rails were then installed around the arena.

Once all the grading and fencing were complete, our team undertook seeding and stabilization of all disturbed areas to ensure proper landscaping and erosion control.

The final touch was painting the new perimeter fence line around the arena. Once the site was fully completed, all fence rails and posts were painted black, giving a finished and professional look to the arena.

Throughout the project, our team’s focus on precision, functionality, and aesthetics ensured that the arena was not only practical for its intended use but also visually pleasing and harmoniously integrated with its surroundings.
